Generally the use of heat-soaked tempered glass is recommended where the risk of spontaneous breakage causes difficulty, either from a replacement point of view, or where falling glass fragments may be unsuitable, such as roof or high level glazing, balustrades, screens and high level curtain walling. The heat soak glass is appropriate method where there is a risk of human impact. In case breakage does occur, the breakage pattern is such that the resultant pieces of glass are relatively harmless and are unlikely to cause severe injury.
The heat soaked glasses are now in great Demand by many companies. Most of the heat soaking process involves reducing the incidence of spontaneous breakage in case of tempered glasses which is caused by nickel supplied. Generally the float glass which is manufactured involves combination of sand, soda ash, limestone, dolomite, salt cake and other ingredients into a furnace heated to a temperature slightly above 1500°C. Next the molten glass is fed into a tin bath where it literally floats on top of a layer of molten tin. The glass tin surface forming a floating ribbon enters an annealing process, where the rate of cooling is controlled to reduce residual stresses within the glass. In the manufacturing procedure many undisclosed particles may be formed within the glass. The most important part includes these aesthetic inclusions which are clearly visible, glass containing these inclusions is removed and discarded from the production run. In most of the tempered Glass, the heated glass is cooled at a much higher rate. This is done to achieve the required internal tensile and surface compression stresses. The high cooling rate does not allow the glass to return to their original state but remain in a high–temperature state within the glass. On returning to their low-temperature state there is an increase in the volume causing additional stresses within and eventually causing a spontaneous breakage.
